Beijing, 28 March 2019 — The 12th edition of Personal Care and Homecare Ingredients (PCHi) trade event concluded with resounding success, after three full-days of business discussions, networking, and learning at the Guangzhou Poly World Trade Center in China.
Held from 26 – 28 February, PCHi 2019 welcomed a total of 25,637 trade professionals from 80 countries and regions through its doors, to uncover four exhibition halls, filled with the latest ingredients and technologies presented by 634 exhibitors from 27 countries and regions. All in all, participating companies showcased more than 3,000 products, and numerous manufacturers introduced brand new products to the world in Guangzhou. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from 110 top industry experts across the various conference tracks at the PCHi Annual Industry Conference and New Technology Sessions.
Throughout the venue, the event’s three key pillars — PCHi Technology, Power, and Spirit — were clearly represented. ‘Technology’ was characterized by the strong portfolio of exhibitors and features like the New Products Showcase and New Technology Sessions. ‘Power’ refers to the brains that drive PCHi, the panel of authoritative industry experts who share their insights generously through the education program. And ‘Spirit’ points toward the spirit of innovation and the quest for excellence and quality, which was undergirded by the industry-acclaimed PCHi Fountain Awards.

Peter LIU, PCHi Project Manager at Reed Sinopharm Exhibitions (RSE), expressed, “While the show has always enjoyed steady growth since its inception, this year’s event surpassed past editions not just in attendance, but also in terms of the level of content — whether it be exhibits on show floor or insights from conference sessions. There was a heightened sense of strength and vitality at the event this year that suggested the crossing of yet another threshold, and I think it signals a new chapter for PCHi.”
Push for Innovation in the Burgeoning Asia Pacific Market
According to Euromonitor International, the global beauty and personal care industry made steady gains and registered a market retail value of US$491 billion in 2018, and is expected to hit US$616 billion by 2022 with a 6% CAGR forecast. The Asia Pacific region dominated the market at US$159 billion (or 32% contribution to global value size), surpassing both North America and Western Europe regions.
The flourishing Asian market is gaining prominence, and it is no wonder that cosmetics manufacturers and ingredient suppliers are paying much closer attention to the needs and demands of consumers here. Beauty trends determine the ‘next big thing’, and PCHi provides brand owners and formulators with the platform to uncover the most relevant and creative product concepts to address them.
As a technology-driven and innovation-led event, PCHi has established itself as the perfect launch pad for ingredient suppliers over the years. Increasingly, companies are choosing to introduce their latest technologies first in China, and are even developing new concepts just for the Chinese market. Several products from global companies such as Ashland, IFF-Lucas Meyer Cosmetics, and Hallstar made their debut at PCHi this year, while DSM presented non-invasive topical solutions for the ‘light medical beauty’ emerging trend and Croda targeted the need for protection with anti-pollution technology.
A new feature area that placed innovation at the forefront was the PCHi Frontier, an immersive experiential zone comprising a consumer behavior research system ‘Gen-isys’, a Virtual Reality (VR) encounter, and a unique showcase on trendy packaging design concepts for the Post-00s generation.
Over at the PCHi Annual Industry Conference, delegates were offered a well-rounded education program presented by top authoritative experts from around the world. There was a wide range of topics to select from — including trend-driven innovations, rules and regulations, efficacy evaluation, dermo-cosmetics, market trends, formulation, and traditional Chinese medicine — all of which enabled attendees to gain new perspectives for their next product development cycle.
Echoing the same sentiments of innovation elsewhere on the show floor was the prestigious PCHi Fountain Awards Showcase, which highlighted all finalists and winners that stood out among this year’s entries. At the Awards Ceremony, the jury’s relentless spirit to identify and reward the best innovation was infectious, and the collective desire for excellence and quality from all who were present was palpable.
Choice Sourcing Platform Brings the Global Beauty Industry Together
Apart from the efforts to enhance the ‘innovation quotient’ at PCHi 2019, RSE also set up a host of initiatives to facilitate business conversations as a gateway to the Chinese personal care market. These include ‘We Export!’ signs on selected booths, to help international visitors identify export-ready domestic companies; New Technology Sessions for exhibitors to share more about their latest offerings; and the New Product Showcase to help visitors zoom in on cutting-edge ingredients.
Sharing about his personal experience at the show, Mr. Thiraviam Thangar BAZAR, General Manager of Florence Cosmetics Manufacturing Ind. L.L.C. (India), said, “I'm here to look for suppliers, in particular Chinese exporters. There are many companies to connect with here and I think it is a good show with strong international presence.”
“Feature areas like the New Products Showcase are very helpful for visitors like me,” added Mr LIN, who is a formulator with Anglee Beauty (Guangzhou Anjieyu). “These content platforms enable us to easily discover the latest and best innovations that the industry has to offer.”
In fact, despite being an upstream industry event, PCHi remarkably attracts the attention of several Chinese beauty influencers, who regularly attend for the networking and learning opportunities the show offers. Commenting on his motivations for visiting, veteran skincare expert Bing Han — also known as XU Detian PhD candidate at Tongji University Medical School — said, “I first learnt about PCHi in 2009 and I’ve been attending ever since. It’s a great platform for the industry to pick up on developing trends, and for researchers to advocate their ideas. This year, I was invited to speak at the Conference on the evolution and significance of cosmeceuticals in China, and the response was tremendous. Personally, I think that there is no other event like it in China.”
Uncover the Future of Beauty with PCHi
As the curtains close on PCHi 2019, trade professionals can look forward to the third edition of the PCHi Technology Summit, which will take place in Shanghai this Autumn. The Summit aims to provide attendees with a specialized platform for key discussions on market trends and issues. It delves deeper into the status of the domestic market, industry trends, technical insights, and also promotes closer collaborations within the industry.
LIU concluded, “Even as we hit many right notes with this 2019 edition, PCHi will have to evolve along with the global cosmetics and personal care industry — keeping up with and making full use of new technologies in all aspects, right from formulation all the way to consumer-brand interactions. We endeavor to remain ‘the source of beauty’ and the industry’s choice sourcing platform, and we’ll spare no effort in delivering a positive experience to all.”
The 13th edition of PCHi will be held from 26 – 28 February 2020 at the Shanghai World EXPO Exhibition and Convention Center (SWEECC) in China.
